Crafting Introduction

Artisan Beginner Information
(Compiled curtesy of EQ2-Artisan)
What kind of Artisan can I be?

As an artisan, you can follow the path one of nine final schools of crafting. At level 10, you must pick your first class. Follow the handy tree below for to know what path you wish to follow.

Artisan Archetype

  • Craftsman Class
    • Provisioner Sub-class
    • Woodworker Sub-class
    • Carpenter Sub-class

  • Outfitter Class
    • Armorer Sub-class
    • Tailor Sub-class
    • Weaponsmith Sub-class

  • Scholar Class
    • Jeweler Sub-class
    • Alchemist Sub-class
    • Sage Sub-class

Why become an artisan?

Tradeskills are an exciting and valuable part of the Everquest 2 experience. Norrath is full of resources that can be shaped and molded into desireable items for all players. Generally, the quality of goods in game (from worst to best):

  • Common mob
  • Dropped Items
  • Store Bought Items
  • Common Crafted Items (example things made from Tin/Roots/Elm)
  • Common Quest Rewards
  • Uncommon Dropped Items
  • Uncommon Quest Reward
  • Uncommon Crafted Items (example things made from Lapis Lazuli/Bronze/Alder)
  • Rare/Long Quest Rewards
  • Rare Dropped Items
  • Rare Crafted Items
  • Combination of Crafting/Drop/Quest

How do I start crafting?

Click the EQII button, and choose Recipes. Make sure the top filter is set to Unfiltered. Right click any recipe and examine it to see what the ingredients are.

Once you have chosen a recipe, collect the ingredients (harvest them, buy them from a merchant, or buy them from other players). Enter a tradeskill instance, target and face the crafting station that the recipe requires. Double click or right click / create on the actual crafting station, choose the recipe from the list that opens, and click Begin to start crafting.

What do the bars on the crafting window mean?

The top bar represents the total overall quality of the item you are crafting. Once the bar reaches the first tic mark from the right, it will decrease in quality by one. If the bar decreases to the second tic mark it will decrease in quality again. If the bar is completely diminished you will fail. Failing causes you to lose the fuel item, but you will get to keep the rest of your components.

The bottom bar represents the progress you have made towards making a complete item. Once this bar is full, the item is finished.

You can choose at any time to stop your combine, by pressing the Stop button. When you stop the crafting process it will give you the item in the state that you currently are in. So if you have progressed far enough in the process to have the Shaped Tin Long Sword highlighted then if you stop the process then it will give you that item. If you stop the process before you have reached any state it will give you your primary component back but destroy the cost and fuel components used in the recipe.

What are the events that happen during crafting, and what am I supposed to do to react?

The best place to start here is to open your Book of Knowledge (K on your keyboard). Choose the tradeskills tab, and you will see 27 icons. That is 3 each for Alchemy, Arcana, Runecraft, Culinary, Craftsmanship, Woodworking, Light Armoring, Heavy Armoring, Weaponry. If you examine the individual icon's , they will tell you which field of study they will be used for. You may want to go on and rearrange them in your book so they sit next to their common class (click and drag the icon to a blank spot, or to an occupied slot to swap their positions). Make a few hotbars as well; one for Alchemy /Arcana / Runecraft, one for Culinary / Craftsmanship / Woodworking, one for Light Armoring / Heavy Armoring / Weaponry. You gain new reactions at level 10 when you choose your class. If you choose Scholar, you will get a second set of icons for the Alchemy, Arcana, and Runecraft set. If you choose Craftsman you will get a second set of Culinary, Craftsmanship, and Woodworking. And if you choose Outfitter you will get a second set of Light Armoring, Heavy Armoring, and Weaponry. Your third set of reactions comes at level 20 when you choose your final subclass. And finally, you will learn a fourth set of reactions at level 30.

What item gives me the most xp?

There are a few factors that contribute to how much experience that you get at the end of a recipe. They are level of the recipe, what quality you bring the recipe to, how rare of a resource you are working with, and what kind of recipe it is. To explain a little more what each are:

Level: The displayed level of the recipe vs. your tradeskill level.

Quality: While crafting an item you will notice that there are different boxes each of the boxes represent different quality that you can bring the item to, the lower on the list that you get the better.

The items title will reflect the quality of the item. High quality items may give a stat bonus.

These are the item quality titles as far as I know right now in the order given:

  • Malformed - lowest
  • Crude - very low
  • Shaped - low
  • (no title) - average
  • Pristine - high

The higher quality your primary ingredient is, the higher level your product can be. To craft a pristine Rawhide Leather Backpack, for example, you will need to be using Pristine Rawhide Hide Plate. Pristine finished items often have better stats than lower quality products, and always give greater experience when you craft them. ? in the case of backpacks, a pristine item will have more slots and/or greater weight reduction properties. Pristine is your goal for finished products!

Rarity of Resource: There are many different types of resources that are in the game. Some you will find less than others. Those are considered rare materials.

Kind of Recipe: Listing for worst to best experience would be Refine, Interim, and Finish.

So the best experience that you could get would be making a red con/rare item/pristine/finished item.

You also get bonus experience every time you craft an item that is new to you. When you gain a new level, try to make one of every item in your new book -you will get much more experience crafting 3 new recipes that are all level 10 then from crafting a single level 10 item 3 times.

Where do I get my ingredients?

Ingredients are either harvested, crafted, or bought from merchants. Different recipes will have different requirements, but there are some basic patterns they follow.

All recipes use fuel. You can buy this from the vendor on the Isle of Refuge, or the merchant in any tradeskill instance.

  • Forge: Coal
  • Work Bench: Coal
  • Keg: Coal
  • Loom: Filament
  • Chemistry Table: Candle
  • Sawhorse: Sandpaper
  • Engraved Desk: Incense

Low level, basic recipes will use harvested items, and will refine these raw materials into an item to use in higher level recipes. Some more advanced recipes will require you to use several refined items.

Examples - At level 3, you can craft Chloro Wash from : a raw plant (harvested), a liquid (drops from mob or can be purchased from vendor) and fuel (candle purchased from vendor). You can then take that Chloro Wash to craft a Pressed Papeterie from : Raw roots or elm (harvested), Chloro Wash (crafted) and fuel (incense). And at level 6, you can use the Pressed Papeterie to create a mage or priest scroll Apprentice III Static Pulse : Sepia Ink (crafted), Elm Quill (crafted), Pressed Papeterie (crafted), and fuel (incense).

Many items can be both crafted and purchased straight from vendors. Some of the se items will appear on vendors only after the vendor has reached a high level of status within the city. This is a process that you as an artisan are directly involved in, by performing tasks for the wholesalers in your tradeskill society.

Where do I go to craft?

Tradeskill zones are often referred to as Tradeskill instances. (Once a large number of people have entered a particular zone, they will "instance" themselves, to prevent overcrowding.)

There is one instance on the Isle of Refuge, and 4 instances in each of the starting city suburbs. These zones all have maps; explore the zones and hover your mouse over the little icons to find out their names and locations.

On the Isle of Refuge, the instance is located in Mizan?s Tower cellar. This instance is the only one where you will always be alone - it is a solo instance. The other instances all accept up to 24 players.

You can join 1 Class and 1 Wholesaler structure on your character. The wholesaler instance will contain refined components, once the structure has reached a certain level. The benefits of going into the specialized structure is that you can gain a profit by completing recipes that net you experience at the same time.

For example .. If a player joins The War Hagglers in Scale Yard, tha is the only Wholesaler zone that she will be able to join. At level 10 she will choose her specialized class zone to join - again, only one. Anyone can join the Wholesaler structure. Only people of a certain tradeskill class can join the class structures. The benefit of the Wholesaler structure is that you can sell back your harvested components that you might not use.

Where are the merchants with the supplies?

There is one merchant on the Isle of Refuge. In the city instances, there is a merchant just inside the door with basic supplies and books.

How do I buy things from other players?

There are active channels in game that allow you to advertise your needs and your sales. Check your server for the channels, some common names are Freeport_traders and Qeynos_traders. You can also buy from players who have set themselves up as merchants.

To locate a player merchant, use the NPC Broker. There is one in the tradeskill instance. After locating the items you need thru the broker, you can either purchase them straight thru him (click purchase) or track down the seller in person. The broker does charge a commission, so there is good incentive to get out and find the seller in person.

If you are having trouble locating what you need, go to Freeport or Qeynos and find the Black Market broker. You may be able to find cross city what you couldn?t find in your own town. You will pay a much higher commission for these sales, so be ready to open your wallet!

Where do I get recipes?

Recipes are found in recipe books, that you must acquire and scribe. There are many recipe books in Everquest. They can be broken into 2 categories - purchased from NPC vendors and Mob dropped.

The number in the name of the book matches the level an artisan must be to scribe it. Artisan refining volume four, for example, can be scribed by anyone who has reached level 4 artisan. If a book has two numbers in it - Artisan components volume 5&6, for example - it can be scribed once you reach the lower level (5 in this case).

NPC Vendors sell 1 book for every level of artisan from level 3 - 49. There are no books for levels 1 and 2, you are granted those recipes automatically. You can purchase the 3-9 books on the Isle of Refuge, or in your wholesaler instance (see the Tradeskill Instance Guide for information on where these are )

After you have chosen your class (scholar, crafter, outfitter) you will purchase your additional books in your class structure instance. These books are pretty basic recipes and self explanatory - buy it, examine it, scribe it, and the recipes are now yours to create with.

Mob dropped books you will need to find out in the world, or buy from adventurers who have found them. There is not always a book for every level - scholars, for example, only receive 6 books between 10 and 19.
